| Directors Saddle Bill Hill |
Greetings and salutations!
Hey everyone, it’s Christmas time! I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and
took a moment to really think about how privileged we all really are. Even though
we are going through some economic hard times I am confident it won’t last long
and we will come out of it a better country. Personally I am just happy to be alive
and healthy. Everything else is a bonus! Speaking of bonuses, I couldn’t ask for a
better life than working for Harley-Davidson and being involved with a great
group of people like NUHOG.
I’m looking forward to our Christmas party and to seeing all of you there. You can
sign up at the front desk of the shop so come on in today and get your name on the
list. It’s going to be great! I need to give Maria at the Comfort Suites a count a
couple of days before the party. The party is December 13th so don’t wait till the
last minute.
We have a few charities that we are participating in this Christmas. There are
boxes in the store to bring in contributions for The Catholic Community Service’s
Food Bank and Books For Kids which is sponsored by The Children’s Aide
Society. Golden Spike Harley-Davidson is sponsoring a Sub for Santa this year and
attached is a list of the children and what they need. For the kids on this list we are
asking for new items but please keep in mind we will also accept gently used coats
that will find their way to other needy children.
Please allow me to thank you in advance for your generosity this Christmas season,
and also wish everyone and their families a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy
and Prosperous New Year! So everyone come on down and visit us at The Spike
and help stimulate our economy, or just stop by and say hi!
Warmest Wishes,
Bill Hill

Hello HOG’ers –
November is now at an end and we will be seeing snow soon. I hope all of you
have prepared for winter. Time to get out the snow shovels and snow blowers.
Make sure your scooter is winterized or make sure you get to the shop and buy
some studded snow tires.
Boy, the riding season sure flies by fast! However, a few of us have been getting
in some great rides in November.
I hope you went to the shop on the 1st to close out for the mileage challenge for the
year. You never know who’s going to win until they are all counted up. I can
predict there are a few of our members that live on their bikes and probably will
win. But, it is still fun and you get to compete and see how close you were to the
hard-core riders. Good luck to all of you.
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. We all have a lot to be thankful for and
this is the time to be grateful. I know, personally, I have been blessed with so
much. One of the great blessings I have is to be a member of the Northern Utah
HOG Chapter. You are the best in my book, and it has been an honor to represent
you as your Assistant Director.
I hope you all made it to the shop for Black Friday. What a great way to start or
finish you Christmas shopping by starting out with a delicious breakfast. My
thanks go to Brent and Bill and everyone involved.
I hope to see you all at our Christmas party this year. And, I hope you all have a
great Christmas and the best ever New Year.
See you at the meeting on Dec 3.
Safe riding…Kim

Meeting Minutes
Secretary
Dan Long |
Meeting was called to order by Bill Hill, Director, somewhere around 7PM. There
were several men\bers there and probably some new members. Assistant Director
Kim said some words; Dick probably said we still have money, Ed told everyone
to be safe; Trish elaborated on some activities and the meeting was adjourned
around 740PM. Since I wasn’t there I’m only guessing.
Don’t forget the Christmas Party, Dec 13th

| SAFETY ED RHODES |
Group Riding Techniques
· Group riding requires an extreme level of awareness and concentration.
· Know your limits and ride within them; never ride above your abilities.
Mental
Physical
Motorcycle
Environment
Experience level
· Come to the ride prepared.
Arrive with a full tank of gas and an empty bladder
Bring appropriate riding gear for the expected range of conditions.
· Maintain a constant speed. This helps prevent the “rubber band effect.”
· Novices or riders that are new to group riding should ride at the front or near
the back.
· Always ride in a tight but courteous staggered formation or single-file line.
· Your eyes should be watching a few bikes up the road from you, not fixed on
the bike in front of you. Always be looking at least four seconds ahead.
· Riding side by side is very dangerous and against the law in many states. The
only time bikes are to be side by side is when the group is stopped at an
intersection.
· Never come up on the motorcycle in front of or beside you.
· In a staggered or single-file formation, do not pass the bike in front of you.
· If an exit is missed, stick together as a group, proceed to the next exit, then
return to the correct exit.
· When in a tight curve, the rider on the outside of the curve is required to give
room to the rider on the inside in case the curve is too tight to negotiate at that
speed without crowding.
Primary riding formation.
· Single file is used when directed by the ride leader.
· One-second rule: The bike in the lane to your left or right should not be less
than one second ahead of you.
· Two-second rule: Maintain at least two seconds between you and the rider in
front of you.
· Four-second rule: Look ahead four seconds at your immediate path of travel
to give yourself more time to react to a hazard.
· Twelve-second rule: Also look ahead at your anticipated path of travel.
Twelve seconds is about one city block CONT'D
Stopping at an Intersection
· Break staggered formation and pull up beside the bike in the adjacent lane.
· When the ride leader has determined it is safe, he/she will proceed, followed by the
“number two” bike, the “number three” bike, the “number four” bike, etc.
· If you don’t make it through the intersection with the group, RELAX. Proceed
when safe
Passing on a Four-Lane Road
· The ride leader gives the proper signal.
· Everyone passes back the signal and HOLDS position.
· When safe, the sweep rider will pull over into the target lane and protect the lane.
· As the last car clears through, the ride leader changes lanes and signals others
(sweeping signal to the left or right).
· Following the bike in front, each successive bike moves into the new lane. Don’t
jump the change!
· If protecting the lane might cause a traffic hazard, pass when it is safe.
Passing on a Two-Lane Road
· Usually very difficult for a group to pass a slow-moving car.
· If the lead rider decides to pass the car, each rider must decide on his/her own if it
is safe to follow.
· Pass as if you were riding alone.
· IMPORTANT: After passing the vehicle, move on ahead to make room for all the
bikes that will come behind you.
Group Parking
· Orderly parking reduces the time needed to get off the road.
· Ride leader leads the group off the road. Ride leader should ride all the way around
the lot to allow all riders to get off the road. If fueling, ride leader will pull all the
way around, then pull up to the fuel station.
· Follow the ride leader to the selected parking area and establish your parking
position.
· Each bike should pull ahead of the intended parking place and then back up into
the spot.
· After you pull into your parking position and the group has settled down, you can
move to the fueling area.
· If you find yourself at the end of the group and can’t get off the road while waiting
for others to park, GO AROUND.
